Hospitals and Nursing Homes

Hygienic, phased fit-out for hospitals, nursing homes and diagnostic centres that keeps care running.

In a hospital or nursing home, interior work is not only about appearance. Surfaces must be easy to clean, joints must be sealed, noise and dust must be controlled, and patients, staff and visitors must keep moving safely. We plan and carry out fit-out and upkeep with those priorities first.

What hospitals and clinics usually need

Area Typical scope
Wards and patient rooms Partitions, ceilings, flooring, doors, windows and blinds
Consulting rooms and clinics Privacy partitions, sound control, easy-to-clean finishes
Corridors and reception Durable floors, wall protection, ceilings that conceal services
Waiting areas Comfortable, clean, well-lit spaces with sensible materials
Diagnostic and imaging areas Rooms with special requirements; specialist designs for shielding and equipment
Operating theatres and ICUs Specialist systems; we work to the hospital's consultant's design
Facade and entrance Cladding, glazing and canopies for a clean, safe frontage
Maintenance Scheduled inspection and repair

Specialist spaces such as operating theatres, isolation rooms and radiology suites need designs from qualified consultants. We work to those designs.

Principles we follow

Hygiene by design. Smooth, non-porous and seamless surfaces are easier to clean. Corners, junctions and joints are where dirt collects, so we seal them, cove floors where needed, and avoid ledges and unnecessary detail.

Infection control. The hospital's infection-control team sets the rules. We agree a plan before work starts: barriers, air handling, cleaning, waste routes and monitoring. Work stops if the plan is breached.

Keep care running. We phase work by ward or zone, so the hospital never loses more space than planned, and we keep emergency routes and fire exits open.

Noise and dust. Cutting, drilling and demolition are scheduled for low-impact times where possible, using dust extraction, wet methods and vacuum cleaning.

Safety. Fire compartments, sprinklers, smoke detectors, medical gas lines and electrical systems must stay protected and compliant. We coordinate with the hospital's engineers and do not interfere with live systems without permission.

Materials. We choose materials that are durable, wipeable and suitable for the area. See flooring for hospitals and clinics and aluminium or gypsum false ceilings for hospitals.

How we run a hospital project

  1. Briefing and site visit with the administrator, facility manager and, where relevant, the infection-control team.
  2. Phasing plan. Which areas close, for how long, and how patients and staff move around them.
  3. Design and materials agreed with the team, with samples.
  4. Method statement and safety plan, including barriers, cleaning and waste handling.
  5. Work in phases, with daily cleaning and progress reports.
  6. Inspection and handover of each zone, with a snag list closed before the area reopens.
  7. Aftercare and maintenance.

Design details that matter

  • Floors: welded vinyl sheet with coved skirting in clinical areas; durable vinyl planks or tiles in waiting and administrative areas.
  • Ceilings: sealed, smooth ceilings with access panels that close tightly; moisture-resistant or metal ceilings in wet areas.
  • Partitions: smooth, durable partitions that can be cleaned and resist knocks from trolleys and beds; glazed partitions to give visibility where needed.
  • Doors and windows: easy-clean frames, safe glass, door widths for beds and trolleys, vision panels in doors.
  • Corners and edges: rounded or protected corners and wall guards in corridors.
  • Lighting and acoustics: ceiling layouts planned with lighting, and sound control around rooms that need privacy.
  • Colour and comfort: calming, clean colours and good daylight help patients and staff.

Working with the hospital team

  • A named supervisor is on site every day and a named manager is reachable.
  • We attend coordination meetings and share a written weekly programme.
  • We train workers on the hospital's rules before they start.
  • Materials arrive and waste leaves by agreed routes and times.
  • We keep workers away from patient areas and follow the hospital's dress, entry and cleanliness rules.

After handover

Hospitals wear quickly because of cleaning, trolleys and heavy use. A maintenance contract keeps floors, ceilings, partitions and glazing in good order and fixes small faults before they become safety or hygiene problems. Our facade maintenance guide covers the building envelope.

Questions

Hospitals and Nursing Homes: common questions

Can you work in a hospital that is running?
Yes, with planning. We work in phases, separate the work area with barriers, control dust and noise, use agreed routes and hours, and coordinate with the hospital's management and infection-control team.
How do you control dust and infection risk?
Before work starts we agree a plan with the hospital's team: sealed barriers, negative pressure or air filtration where required, wet cutting and vacuum cleaning, covered waste, and protected routes. The hospital's own infection-control rules take priority.
Which floor and ceiling types suit a hospital?
Seamless or welded vinyl floors with coved edges and sealed ceilings are common, with metal or moisture-resistant gypsum ceilings in some areas. The right choice depends on the room's use, so we discuss each area with you.
Do you work at night or on weekends?
Where noise or disruption is a concern, yes. We agree hours with the hospital in advance.
Can you maintain the hospital after the project?
Yes. We offer maintenance contracts covering partitions, ceilings, floors and glazing, with fast response to faults.
