The right floor makes a space easier to clean, safer to walk on and better to look at. We supply and lay vinyl and wooden flooring and prepare the base so that it lasts.
The main options
| Floor | What it is | Good for | Points to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vinyl sheet | Continuous roll, seams can be welded | Hospitals, clinics, labs, schools | Needs a very smooth base; seams must be well done for hygiene |
| Vinyl tiles and planks | Loose-lay or glued tiles and planks | Offices, retail, corridors, classrooms | Easy to replace individual pieces; edges must be tight |
| Laminate | Printed fibreboard click-together planks | Offices, showrooms, dry areas | Not for wet areas; keep clear of standing water |
| Engineered wood | Real wood surface on a stable core | Offices, hotels, reception areas | Needs acclimatisation and a flat, dry base |
| Solid wood | Single-piece planks | Premium interiors | Sensitive to moisture and temperature; needs skilled fitting |
| Wood-finish skirting and trims | Matching edges and transitions | All wood-effect floors | Plan details at doors and thresholds |
Our guide to flooring for hospitals and clinics explains the hygiene points for healthcare buildings.
Preparing the base
Most flooring problems begin below the floor.
- Flatness. Vinyl follows the surface under it, so bumps and dips show. We check with a straightedge and level low spots with a self-levelling compound.
- Dryness. Moisture from the slab or from leaks damages adhesive and wood. We test the base and wait or treat it if it is damp.
- Cleanliness. Dust, oil, paint and old adhesive must be removed so that adhesive can bond.
- Soundness. Loose or cracked areas are repaired before the floor goes down.
- Temperature and acclimatisation. Wood and laminate are kept in the room for the time the maker advises before fitting.
How the work runs
- Site visit. We check the floor area, levels, moisture, doors, thresholds and traffic.
- Selection. We help you choose the type, thickness, finish and colour, with samples.
- Programme. Flooring is scheduled after wet trades and painting where possible, with protection afterward.
- Base preparation. Repairs, levelling and priming.
- Laying. Setting out from the centre or the longest wall, adhesive or underlay as specified, seams and joints finished neatly, expansion gaps left where required.
- Finishing. Skirting, coving, trims and thresholds fitted, the floor cleaned and protected.
- Handover with care instructions and any maintenance products recommended.
Details that make a good floor
- Coving and skirting. In hospitals and kitchens, the floor can be turned up the wall to form a sealed, easily cleaned corner.
- Joints and seams. Sheet vinyl seams can be heat-welded for hygiene.
- Thresholds. Where floors meet, a neat trim avoids trip hazards.
- Slip resistance. Wet or high-traffic areas need a surface with suitable grip.
- Expansion gaps. Wood and laminate move with humidity. Gaps at the edges are hidden under skirting.
- Protection. After laying, floors are covered to prevent damage while other trades finish.
Common problems and how to avoid them
| Problem | Usual cause | How we avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| Bubbles or lifting | Damp base, poor adhesive coverage | Moisture check, correct adhesive and rolling |
| Visible bumps | Uneven base | Levelling before laying |
| Gaps between planks | Poor fitting or movement | Correct acclimatisation and tight joints |
| Buckled boards | No expansion gap, moisture | Gaps left, moisture controlled |
| Seams opening | Poor welding or adhesive | Correct tools and technique, clean seams |
| Dull, scratched surface | Wrong cleaning or no protection | Care advice, protective pads under furniture |
Care and maintenance
Sweep or vacuum frequently, because grit scratches. Damp-mop with a mild cleaner and wipe up spills at once. Do not soak wooden floors. Use felt pads under furniture and protect floors from heavy point loads. Re-seal joints and replace damaged pieces before problems spread. Our maintenance contracts include floor checks.
What affects cost and time
The type and thickness of the floor, the area, the condition of the base, the amount of preparation, the number of cuts and corners, the skirting and trims, and the working hours all affect cost. Base preparation is often a large share of the work and should be listed separately.
